WRE: Wastewater Discharge
Careful evaluation of wastewater treatment plant capacity and its relationship to future growth plans also is a required WRE component. Compliance with applicable "Tributary Strategies" and Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) are required for protection of the Chesapeake Bay. In some circumstances, protective criteria can be achieved via engineering upgrades to treatment processes (e.g., Enhanced Nutrient Removal or ENR) and grant moneys may be available from MDE. In other circumstances, more innovative approaches are required, including but not restricted to replacing surface discharges with spray irrigation systems and/or trading for additional nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorous) loading credits.
