Surface Water Influence Studies and Remedies
Groundwater under the direct influence of surface water, if relied upon as a potable supply, can carry pathogenic organisms Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Removal of these micro-organisms, via micro-particulate filtration, often results in a sharp increase in the capital and operating cost of water treatment plants. For many smaller public systems and most private systems, such filtration is cost-prohibitive and owners instead to develop alternate sources (with all the risks, uncertainties and costs involved).
ALWI designs its groundwater development programs with these costs and risks in mind, to limit the owner's biological and economic exposure to surface water. We employ proven measures in the field to specify and design wells to limit the pathogenic risk, we perform accurate evaluations of surface water influence risks during the construction and testing of wells, we quantify interactions between groundwater and neighboring surface waters and we support our assessments through sophisticated and unbiased biochemical testing protocols.
In many cases, the surface water risk can be avoided or mitigated. When surface water influence is likely or inevitable, we assist our clients with compliance sampling, laboratory analyses and cost-effective engineering solutions as appropriate.
