ALWI completed a 15-month contract, wherein we prepared Source Water Assessments for more than 300 transient, non-community, public groundwater systems across Frederick and Howard Counties, Maryland. The work was performed under contract to the Maryland Department of the Environment, and in accordance with the 1999 MDE Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP). We delineated wellhead protection areas, we identified and mapped contamination hazards, we assessed the susceptibility of the subject wells to contamination, and we formulated specific strategies to reduce the future risk of contamination. ALWI’s David Pielmeier, GIS Analyst, managed the project.
At the same time and under the management of Mr. James M. Wilburn, IV, ALWI completed a six-year engagement for the benefit of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, wherein we assessed the sustainability and reliability of small community groundwater supply systems statewide. ALWI was the sole hydrogeological subconsultant on the first multi-year PADEP contract to assess and improve the safety and reliability of small groundwater supply systems, wherein the existing public supply source is affected by chronic safe yield or water quality problems. The water systems benefiting from ALWI’s professional services withdraw water from fractured bedrock aquifers and generally have multiple wells closely spaced, wherein wellfield optimization is one of the tangible project goals.
