Advanced Land and Water, Inc. has one opening for an intern for summer 2018 at our Eldersburg, Maryland office. This position is ideal for a college student majoring in the earth / environmental sciences or related discipline, who is interested in gaining diverse professional experience with a water supply and environmental consulting firm during the summer. The intern will work daily with geologists, hydrogeologists, soil scientists, environmental scientists and GIS analysts on a variety of projects for both public and private sector clients.
Projects generally focus on water resources or soil evaluations and investigations. Typical projects include: hydrogeological feasibility evaluations; well siting studies; water resource exploration, development, permitting and protection projects; pumping tests of wells; sampling soil and water; soil suitability evaluations for the land application of wastewater; and various environmental inspection and assessment projects.
The intern will work with our staff, and will receive training in a variety of data collection and site evaluation techniques including the use of various types of field and office equipment intrinsic to the practice of the environmental sciences. In the office, the intern will assist our staff with technical research, background studies, data entry, data reduction and interpretation, and other office duties as necessary. This position will be both field and office intensive.
Ideal applicants will be well organized, highly motivated, and are expected to bring a positive attitude and a genuine interest in learning about the applied earth/environmental science profession. Strong personal computer skills are essential; specifically, we require an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with GIS is a plus. The office has a casual dress code, while appropriate field attire is boots (hiking and/or steel-toed boots) and jeans. Some light/moderate manual labor and moderate hiking may be required when in the field. Compensation may be considered at a rate of $10 to $15/hour based on education, experience and interests. Benefits are not included other than as required by law. Position is offered as full time, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm; occasional overtime or out-of-town work may be requested as the needs of the Company’s clientele dictate. Anticipated duration: 8-10 weeks (pending availability of student).
