Environmental Site Assessment, Investigation, Remediation and Closure
ALWI is an environmental consulting company specializing in two complementary
practice areas: the environmental assessment of property to evaluate its
physical condition and development/redevelopment suitability, and water
resources exploration, development, management and protection. Our
company has earned a reputation for providing innovative and cost-effective
environmental solutions by combining sound scientific study criteria with
economic, environmental, and community considerations. As a corporate
philosophy, our professional efforts are focused on protecting the
environment, for the betterment of public health and welfare. We are
accustomed to working under circumstances of stringent timelines, fixed
budgets and strict confidentiality requirements. These three elements
often are central in planning and executing real estate evaluations and
transactions.
ALWI's professional staff has completed nearly a thousand Phase I and
Phase II ESAs, as well as several hundred Transaction Screens, subsurface
hydrogeologic investigations, landfill studies, and environmental
remediation designs. Our staff has performed similar work throughout the
eastern and central United States, and maintains appropriate licensure in
Maryland and many neighboring jurisdictions. Our staff has performed over
900 ESA projects, collectively, within Maryland and a surrounding radius
of over 500 miles.
Generally, the purpose of ESAs is to identify 'recognized environmental
conditions' (REC), defined by the American Society for Testing and
Materials (ASTM) as "the presence or likely presence of hazardous substances or
petroleum products on a property under conditions that indicate an
existing release, past release or material threat of release into the ground,
groundwater or surface water of the property. RECs are not intended to
include de minimus conditions that generally do not present a material
risk of harm to the public health or the environment. De minimus conditions
may be considered those that would not generally be the subject of an
enforcement action if brought to the attention of appropriate government
agencies."
