Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has established a grant program for the improvement of the safety and reliability of small water systems with chronic safe yield and water quality problems. Because the sites generally are located in remote rural areas, interconnection to a larger and safer supply is not an option and the cost of Safe Drinking Water Act compliance is prohibitive.
As hydrogeological subconsultant on this five year, $3.5 million state contract, ALWI generally becomes involved when groundwater is deemed an appropriate solution (for most of the eligible sites, it is the only feasible option). ALWI uses fracture trace analysis and other hydrogeologic well siting techniques to locate high yielding, high-quality replacement or supplemental groundwater supplies. ALWI manages drilling and testing, and then uses the data obtained to evaluate and document the safe yield and water quality for permitting. Such projects typically culminate with the preparation of source water assessments and wellhead protection plans.
To date, ALWI has worked on improving the safety and reliability of groundwater sources benefiting community water systems in Bradford, Carbon, Center, Franklin, Fulton, Huntington, Lancaster, Mifflin, McKean and Wyoming Counties, Pennsylvania.
