Source Water Assessments and Wellhead Protection
Allegany County, Maryland
ALWI prepared source water assessments and wellhead protection plans for 64 Public, Non-Transient, Non-Community (NTNC) and TNC groundwater-supplied systems, under contract to the Allegany County Health Department, in western Maryland. ALWI collected baseline water quality and hydrogeologic data from more than 35 additional NTNC and TNC systems that became eligible for public water supply connection during the course of this nine-month project.
Our professional staff characterized the hydrogeologic framework surrounding and upgradient of wells, springs and surface water intakes, including the design and implementation of a baseline groundwater sampling program. We developed risk mitigation strategies to protect against future adverse impacts to water quantity and quality. The final product was prepared using GIS.
Certain elements of this project had considerable similarity to the work now contemplated: multiple sites in private ownership of parties with varying degrees of interest in and cooperation with SWAP work; economies of scale allowing strategic completion of tasks simultaneously on multiple sites; rural NTNCs and TNCs having most contamination hazards related to well construction and near-well storage practices; and closely spaced NTNCs and TNCs allowing overlapping field reconnaissance work to occur.
